The Art of the Terrarium
History Tours and Nature Hikes
Anything is an art when you elevate the process from a series of steps to a meditation. I try to apply this philosophy as much as I can to what I do—the journey makes the destination.
I grew up in the 80s but my world was still very much steeped in the previous decade: earth tones, psychedelic fonts, macrame owls and plants—plants everywhere. It was within that 70s residue that I discovered my love of terrariums.
When I moved to Brooklyn I saw terrariums for sale in the Holiday markets that were little more than overpriced jars with some rocks, potting soil and a few ill-fitting tropical plants. I knew I could do better. Rather than deal with the hassle of selling them (and finding a place in Brooklyn to store them) I started teaching people how to make their own terrariums using containers they had lying around their homes. For over a decade I’ve offered my classes at libraries, community centers, private parties and adult learning programs in greater NYC and now Western New York. Helping others connect with their creative spirit through terrarium making constantly reshapes my own vision, which I share through demonstrations, exhibits and commissions. Send me a message if you’d like to learn more.
